As we have noted in the about this website page we for the wartime letters of the Second World War aim to have a day by day summary of some - but not even close to all - of the things that happened the day the letter was postmarked. As noted there we make use of the The World War II Database (particularly their day by day account of the war which can be found here). Of course they use various resources including some that could be in error (they sometimes use Wikipedia); on the other hand most of it can be verified but should you find an error please report it to the the discussions list.

In addition to this here are some of the resources I have; where possible I have noted the information I got in particular from the resource (this document was first created on the 15th of March 2018 and it's certain I won't have remembered what exactly I put where; my hope is in time to update the list with respect to things already added as well as things I add anew):

The Memoirs of SS Kommandant of Auschwitz Rudolf Höss

  • The Germans had their own names for the camps; whereas Auschwitz is in German the camp known as the Chełmno extermination camp is in German Kulmhof. I first learnt of this in Rudolf Höss's memoirs. The editors did tend to not use the German names but only because they presume most readers would want to more easily identify what the camp is more generally known as (or perhaps 'where' is more correct).
  • Although I already knew the Wannseekonferenz (Wannsee Conference), a critical step in the Final Solution of the Jewish question, was on 20 January 1942, this copy of Rudolf Höss's memoirs have the minutes of the conference. The conference was referenced on the 1942 index page although only briefly.
