Soviet hospital ship Armenia departs with 7,000 civilians and wounded troops at 0800 hours against orders strictly forbidding this in broad daylight. At 1129 hours a German He 111 bomber of the Luftwaffe unit Kampfgeschwader 26 (KG 26) 'Löwengeschwader' (Bomber Wing 26 aka Lions' Wing) attacks the ship, despite the red cross on the ship. All but eight people were killed.

Commander of the German XIX Army Corps Heinz Wilhelm Guderian notes in his diary that his troops are severely suffering from Soviet frostbite. 'As a result of the cold, the machine-guns were no longer able to fire... The result of all this was a panic... The battle worthiness of our infantry is at an end.' Meanwhile Joseph Stalin makes a speech during the October Revolution anniversary celebration predicting Germany's troops were facing a disaster even though they were only 100 miles from Moscow.

Britain beings Operation Flipper with submarines HMS Torbay and HMS Talisman; commandos were to be delivered behind enemy lines in Libya in preparation of Operation Crusader which would ultimately lead to the first defeat of Germany in North Africa.

US President Franklin Roosevelt orders protection for power stations, dams and other important infrastructures.
